My Grand Tour of China: Xi'an

Xi’an: Ancient Architecture, Cultural Traditions, and an Evening Alive with Color

Where China’s history feels close

Xi’an was a highlight of my journey through China. As the eastern starting point of the historic Silk Road and the capital of several important dynasties, the city has a long story to tell. During my visit, I was struck by the way historic architecture and cultural traditions sit alongside the energy of a modern city.

Architecture and everyday life

The city’s towers, traditional buildings, and carefully decorated entrances reward a closer look. Beyond the grand landmarks, the streets themselves offer plenty to notice: painted details, old rooflines, shops, and people going about their day. These scenes helped make the history feel connected to everyday life rather than something confined to a museum.

Xi’an after dark

After sunset, the streets took on a different character. Bright signs, colorful façades, red lanterns, and crowds made the historic district feel festive and full of movement. Rather than repeat several nearly identical views, this selection shows different aspects of the evening—from food and storefronts to gateways and lantern-lit lanes.

Food displayed in a shop window offers a glimpse of local street life.

Crowds fill the lively evening shopping streets.

Illuminated storefronts brighten the historic district after dark.

A wider evening view captures the busy streets and bright façades.

Red lanterns create a warm glow along a narrow street.

A Night of Music, Water, and Light

One of the most spectacular moments of my visit to Xi’an was the evening fountain and light show. Jets of water rose in changing patterns while colored lights and beams swept across the night sky. The crowds gathered along the plaza, phones raised, as the fountains shifted from warm reds and golds to vivid purples and cool blues. It was a memorable combination of modern spectacle and the city’s grand, illuminated setting.

Purple and blue fountains glow beneath sweeping beams of light.

Tall fountains rise in warm colors as green lasers cross the sky.

A city worth slowing down for

Xi’an offered a memorable mix of history, architecture, cultural performance, and everyday city life. It was another distinctive chapter in my grand tour of China—and a reminder that a city’s character often emerges from the combination of its famous landmarks and the ordinary scenes around them.
