One of the responsibilities of a food blogger is to share what they have found during their culinary pursuits. Sometimes you feel torn between saving for yourself and sharing with others. The little known secret is great because you get to know and enjoy and not have to fight others (lines, prices, etc.) for the privilege. This is one reason I have been slow to share this find. It helps that they have begun to expand opportunities for purchase and the quest is less difficult than before.
Let me begin with my quest to find some great bread to enjoy (on occasion). My special bread treat years ago was the 12-grain/9-grain bread from a local bakery, Taste of Bavaria. This bakery (now closed), was located outside of town in part of a house. I knew the original owners, Mary Alice and Larry Larrieu. They created this wonderful cafe and bakery that made you feel like you were in a European cafe/bakery. Although I only ate at the restaurant a couple of times, I would make a regular trips on a Saturday morning to get a loaf of this bread. When fresh it was great for sandwich, but it was froze well and made wonderful toast for weeks to come.
Since the bakery closed several years ago, I have been trying to find a suitable substitute. Although it is not the same, the bread from Bellegarde Bakery is filling that special bread need for me now. I stumbled on a sandwich at a stall in the French Market. From there I tracked it down to St. James Cheese company and Rouses in the Quarter and CBD. They have recently begun delivering to a couple of locations on the Northshore and I see recently to Baton Rouge. Here is a link that tells you where to find the bread:

Now I'm not going to tell you what time the bread arrives at these locations because I don't want to have to compete with more people to get the loaves. You will have to investigate that for yourself. :) Happy Eating!
